The Northern Range from the North Entrance to the Northeast Entrance is open year round to public travel. This is a three hour drive via Bozeman from Big Sky, one way. Facilities are limited, yet open. This section of Yellowstone offers Mammoth Hot Springs, Undine Falls, the Roosevelt Arch and the best wildlife habitat in found in the entire Yellowstone Ecosystem. Bring your spotting scope in case you have some wolves off in the distance.
Mammoth Hot Springs is one of Yellowstone’s most unique and beautiful thermal features. The hot waters at Mammoth deposit up to two tons of rock a day, therefore changes every day. Getting out and walking the boardwalks at Mammoth will get you up close to these beautiful springs.
Remember to watch for wildlife on all of the area roadways. There can be hundreds of deer and elk on the road between Livingston and Gardiner before you even reach the park.
Mode of Travel
The Northern Range is plowed and open year ‘round to cars and busses. Please pull off of the road to view wildlife and expect wildlife on all of the area roadways. Travel at night is not recommended.
Other Activities
Cross-country skiing
The Northern Range has many options for cross country skiing. Groomed trails include Upper Terrace Drive, Blacktail Plateau Drive, and some snowcoach access skiing. Ungroomed trips are limitless and include Tower Falls and the Petrified Tree. There are several other trails between Mammoth and Cooke City.
